The three components of Leapwork viz. Studio, Controller, and Agent can be installed on physical and/or virtual machines in protected networks behind firewalls and with or without internet access.
All the three components can be installed either on a single machine i.e. Standalone Configuration or can also be installed in a Distributed Configuration as shown below:
For standalone configuration, generally, there's no challenge observed. However, in the case of distributed configuration, there are certain factors to be taken care of.
1. Ensuring the connectivity from the studio to the controller machine.
When the user starts the Studio for the first time, it will automatically show the available Controller(s) and the studio will prompt to select which Controller to connect to. Before you do this, you cannot use Leapwork.
The controller is service and is running on a specific port (default: 9000), so the ability to listen at this port should be allowed from/within the controller machine. For this, kindly allow the controller port from Firewall settings for TCP connection.
A simple test to ensure the connectivity is done using the telnet command.
To use telnet for the controller connectivity, follow the steps below:
- First, find out the IP address of the server/controller machine. For this, you need to access the server and use the ipconfig command in the command prompt.
- Select the Windows key and the R key.
- In the Run box type CMD.
- Select OK.
- Type Telnet IP Address Controller Port
e.g. Telnet 192.168.1.10 9000
- If you see a blank cursor then the connection is fine. You can close the command prompt window.
- If you get the message that 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. you will have to enable Telnet. See the section below: How to Enable telnet?
- If you get an error or are unable to telnet to the server please contact your Network Administrator.
2. Ensuring the connectivity from the controller to the agent machine.
In order to run the test cases on the agent machine, the Leapwork controller needs to access the Leapwork agent.
The agent is service and is running on a specific port (default: 6777), so the ability to listen at this port should be allowed from/within the agent machine. For this, kindly allow the agent port from Firewall settings for TCP connection.
A simple test to ensure the connectivity is done using the telnet command.
To use telnet for the agent connectivity, follow the steps below:
- First, find out the IP address of the runner/agent machine. For this you need to access the agent computer and use the ipconfig command in command prompt.
- Select the Windows key and the R key.
- In the Run box type CMD.
- Select OK.
- Type Telnet IP Address Agent Port
e.g. Telnet 192.168.1.15 6777
How to enable telnet?
Select Start >> Control Panel >> then Programs and Features (or Programs)
To enable Telnet, follow these steps:
- Select Turn Windows Features on or off
- Check the box for both Telnet Client and Telnet Server
- Select OK
- Verify that you can now Telnet the port
Note: If you are not an administrator on your computer, probably you won't be able to see the above options. In that case, please contact your IT Service Desk or Network Administrator.
